Our Working Environment

Situated in the heart of the Wharfe Valley, Otley is an old and very well established market town now re-positioning itself as a centre for those working in Leeds and Bradford particularly who wish to increase their quality of life. The town benefits from good local schools and supermarkets, and a traditional market two days each week.

The setting is extremely attractive and is within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales National Park whilst being within easy travelling distance of Leeds and Bradford as well as Harrogate. Ilkley and Skipton for entertainment and leisure purposes.

The firm’s offices were totally re-designed and re-furbished in 2004 and offer an excellent working environment, backed up by significant and on-going investment in IT, and an experienced staff currently deployed on a one to one basis. Wheelchair access is available by ramp on request, and a passenger lift is available.

Our History in brief

Newstead & Walker is a very old established firm of Otley solicitors. Nearly two centuries ago there were Newsteads practising in the town. The most recent Newstead was Cecil who practised from 1920 until his retirement in 1965. His father and two uncles were also solicitors; the latter practised in the town as C.J. and A.E. Newstead & Co, well over 100 years ago. There are also archive records of one Henry Newstead, attorney, practising at the beginning of the 19th century.

Harry Walker joined Cecil in the practise in 1955. During his own practising career, Harry was appointed Chairman of the Agricultural Land Tribunal for the Yorkshire and Lancashire region, retiring in 1979 when he became the first solicitor to be appointed as a Circuit Judge on the North Eastern circuit.

Our solicitors are well equipped to deal with the many and varied legal problems raised by these groups.

We look for a long-term commitment from both our solicitors and staff. This ensures continuity and familiarity with our clients' affairs, and provides a reliable basis for a top quality personal service that can be difficult to find in larger firms where fee earners change readily. We also believe in the benefits of experience, and therefore offer fully qualified solicitors as fee earners almost exclusively.

The firm has invested in up to date specialist legal information technology, which is continually being improved and updated as part of our commitment to our clients.
