We are seeking a full-time solicitor with lots of energy to assist in our busy commercial property department. The role will principally involve commercial property but some residential development and general conveyancing may be involved. Residential experience is not essential and appropriate training would be given to the successful applicant.

The ideal candidate will have several years post qualification experience under their belt, be technically competent in general commercial property work and able to hit the ground running with a varied caseload. Operating in the market town of Otley we have gained a good reputation amongst our larger counterparts in Leeds and beyond and in that regard are punching above our weight in terms of the calibre of work and clients we have been involved with.

The role would include commercial sales and purchases including portfolios, landlord and tenant work acting for both landlords and tenants and small business acquisitions and disposals. No following is necessary since help is required for our two commercial property partners who have a regular flow of work from a number of high net worth individuals and small businesses. The work is of both a local and national nature.

In addition to being able to demonstrate a good level of experience and legal competence, we are looking for somebody with personability and enthusiasm. An ability to establish a rapport with clients and contacts is essential as is an aptitude for hard work and a degree of hunger for success.

The role would particularly suit somebody who is attracted the combination of high value national transactions and our equally important local work and who is also able to throw themselves enthusiastically into marketing endeavours and contributing to our great links with the local business community here in the Wharfe Valley and also in Leeds and beyond.

We are currently looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Private Client solicitor to take a substantial role in this growing team.

This is a busy role and extensive experience in wills estates and LPA transactional work is essential, including experience of working with the elderly and dealing with trusts and Court of Protection matters. STEP qualification is preferred.

Preference will be given under our established policy to an individual who knows the Wharfe Valley and surrounding area and who has a real connection with it.

The right person must be experienced enough to take on an existing case load with a minimum of supervision and demonstrate an enthusiasm and ability for the creation and development new work.

Job Description – Will & Probate Solicitor 

All the needs of private clients, re: Wills, probate and trusts, including LPAs, Receiverships, Public Guardianship work, IHT planning and associated needs of our clients and the day to day conduct of their matters

Main Duties

a) Interviewing & Advising clients re: work types listed above

b) Administration of case file management in accordance with our procedures

c) Ensuring that case work is promptly and efficiently billed

d) Regular review of files, including conducting peer file audits

e) Developing the firms procedures and documentation

f) Enhanced IT usage within the department

g) Marketing the department, the firm and yourself

h) Keeping up to date with changes in law and practice

i) Attending training courses as agreed.

j) Acquainting self with the contents of the Office manual and complying with its procedures

k) Maintaining own training and development record

Personal skills, knowledge & experience     

a) High level financial probity and trust, due to the Partners, our client base and other professionals, maintaining discretion and confidentiality at all times. Transparency and honesty are prerequisites

b) Communication skills, including handling clients sympathetically and sensitively, but clearly, effectively and efficiently. Excellent verbal, written and presentational skills are required, to give an authoritative, confident and articulate image both in and outside the work environment.

c) High level of initiative, and the ability to think laterally and identify practical solutions

d) Thorough knowledge of all relevant law and practice including good research skills via appropriate use of IT

e) Experience in interviewing and advising clients and managing files effectively and unsupervised

f) Commitment to a long term programme of development of self and of the department for personal benefit and for that of the firm

g) Ability to operate effectively as part of the team, freely exchanging information and ideas, including a willingness to muck in at all levels

h) An interest and aptitude in marketing of the department in particular and the firm in general

i) High level of competence in individual operation of Microsoft Excel Outlook and Word and the firm’s specialist legal software applications

j) Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work under pressure, and meet and juggle deadlines, and react positively to urgent situations

k) An interest in developing and adapting the firms’ IT systems including case management and precedents

l) An involvement in and knowledge of the local community, including living in the locality

Academic qualifications – Suitable and relevant academic and professional qualifications, with subsequent updated training. Membership of STEP is desirable.
